An award-winning operation with well-regarded process structures already in place still didn't have a governed model of them. That was the starting point.

The target

A standard framework, not a better reputation.

Munich Airport was already recognised for excellent process structures in its traditional operations. Recognition wasn't the goal. A basic, standardised process structure was, one that gave the organisation transparency over how its processes actually aligned and interacted toward its objectives, not just a description of how they were meant to.

Why the model, not just the diagram

Subsidiaries and external providers all had to read the same process.

The scope wasn't a single team's workflow. It included subsidiaries and external providers, which meant the software had to be flexible enough to accommodate requirements from all of them, not just the ones closest to the project. Process modellers and future users were brought in early and worked together from the start, rather than modellers building something and handing it over afterward.

The result so far

90% of processes migrated and revised onto one model.

The migration itself became an opportunity: existing process documents were revised as they moved onto the platform, rather than copied across as-is. Built on BPMN, the model gave Munich Airport a stable base for workflow automation. The next step is adding codes to the processes to build cockpit-style views, so deviations trigger a more responsive decision at the point they're identified, not after the fact.
