Reconciling design and reality is a conformance problem with three parts:

  1. Measure how the process actually runs. Mining the event logs shows the real paths, including deviations from the approved design and how often they happen.
  2. Compare it against the approved model. Conformance checking lays the real behaviour over the intended design and highlights exactly where and how they diverge.
  3. Decide which version is right. Some deviations are the process improving on a bad design; some are the design being ignored to everyone's cost. Resolve each: fix the process to match the design, or update the design to match a better reality.
